Turns Hindi typed in the DevLys 010 font into Unicode Devanagari, which reads correctly in Mangal, Nirmala UI and every other Hindi font, and turns Unicode back into DevLys 010 keys for a document that still uses the old font. The conversion runs in your browser as you type or paste; no text is sent anywhere.

A DevLys file opened on a computer without the font shows strings such as ftyk dk;kZy; where जिला कार्यालय was meant. Those letters are what the file holds: DevLys 010 draws Devanagari on the keys of a Latin font, so the Hindi exists only while that font is applied. After conversion the text is real Devanagari that survives copying, email and search.

How the DevLys 010 table was checked

DevLys 010 has no published character map, so the font file was compared with Kruti Dev 010 code point by code point. Both files carry version 1.0 dated 4 April 1997, and Kruti Dev 010 gives its own unique font identifier as “Alts:DevLys 010”.

Each of the 210 code points the two fonts map was drawn from both and the outlines overlaid: every one is the same glyph at the same width. DevLys 010 maps nothing extra apart from a few blank control codes. So DevLys 010 text is read with the same glyph table as the Kruti Dev converter, and converting to DevLys gives the keys a Kruti Dev typist would press.

Reading the keys back into Hindi means reordering them. The short i sign f is typed before the letter it sits on but stored after it in Unicode; the reph Z is typed after its syllable but is a र् before it; a half letter followed by the stem k is a full letter. Seven glyphs the font draws, such as ö and Ú, have no certain reading and are kept as they are, listed under the result.

Word replaces ' and " with curly quotes as you type, and DevLys 010 leaves some of them blank. The curly single quotes are read as the ' key (श्) and the closing double quote as the " key (ष्), so those letters come back; the opening double quote is read as भ, the glyph the font draws for it.

Examples

An office heading from DevLys 010

DevLys text
ftyk f'k{kk vf/kdkjh dk;kZy;
Unicode text
जिला शिक्षा अधिकारी कार्यालय

In f'k{kk the f moves after 'k (श) to make शि, and {k is क्ष. In dk;kZy; the Z typed after ;k (या) becomes the र् before it: र्या.

Unicode to DevLys

Unicode text
श्रीमान् जिला शिक्षा अधिकारी
DevLys text
Jheku~ ftyk f'k{kk vf/kdkjh

श्र is a single key, J. The virama ending श्रीमान् has no joined form to take, so it is written visibly with ~.

Frequently asked questions

They draw the same glyphs on the same keys at the same widths, under different names, so a document typed in one shows the same Hindi in the other. Either converter here reads text from both.
Its table was checked against DevLys 010 only. Text in another font of the family converts correctly only where that font puts the same glyph on each key, so compare the result with the original before relying on it.
The page shows DevLys text in DevLys 010 only when the font is installed on your device; without it you see the stored keys. The conversion is the same either way.
