Convert

Converts Hindi typed in the Kruti Dev 010 font to Unicode, the encoding Mangal and every modern font use, and Unicode back to Kruti Dev. Paste text in either pane; the result updates as you type. Nothing you paste leaves your browser.

Kruti Dev text pasted anywhere without the font, such as an email, a website or a search box, shows as Latin characters like Hkkjr ljdkj. Converted to Unicode it reads as भारत सरकार everywhere, can be searched and spell-checked, and is the text the SSC's Hindi typing test expects.

How Kruti Dev stores Hindi

Kruti Dev is a legacy font that draws Devanagari shapes on the code points of Latin letters and symbols: d draws क, k the ा stem, D a half क. Text is stored in the order the shapes appear on the line, not the order they are spoken. Unicode stores each letter once, in spoken order, and leaves the shaping to the font. Converting means reading the shapes and putting them back in order:

  • ि is typed before its consonant, and before the whole conjunct when it sits on one; Unicode stores it after.
  • The reph (the र् curl above a letter, key Z) is typed after its syllable and any vowel sign; Unicode stores र् before the consonant.
  • Half letters followed by the ा stem make the full letter, as 'k makes श; with no stem they stay half and join the next consonant.
  • Vowels drawn in parts are joined: अ with the stem is आ, the stem with the े stroke is ो, and ं typed before a vowel sign moves after it.

The glyph table was made from Kruti Dev 010 itself, rendering every character it draws, and the conversion is checked against published Kruti Dev documents. A few rare glyphs whose reading is uncertain are not converted. Characters with no form on the other side, such as English letters in Unicode text, are kept as they are and listed under the result: Kruti Dev would draw an English letter as a Hindi shape.

Kruti Dev often has two ways to type the same shape, such as ç and iz for प्र. Converting to Kruti Dev picks one, so Kruti Dev text converted to Unicode and back can differ in its keys while showing the same Hindi.

From the Patna bulletin of 12 September 2025. In eqeZq the reph Z, typed after the second म, becomes the र् before it in मुर्मु; in fnykbZ the f before n becomes the ि of दि, and bZ is ई.

The ि of क्रि is keyed before the whole conjunct. The reph of पूर्णि is keyed after its syllable, while that syllable's ि still comes first.

Frequently asked questions

Kruti Dev text is stored as Latin characters and shows as Hindi only where the Kruti Dev font is installed and chosen. Anywhere else the letters themselves show. Converting it to Unicode fixes this for good.
Mangal is a Unicode font that ships with Windows. Text converted here is Unicode, so it shows in Mangal when Mangal is chosen, and in any other Hindi font otherwise.
Mangal. The SSC's notice for the Combined Higher Secondary Level Examination 2026 (para 13.9.13.7) requires candidates who take the LDC/JSA typing test in Hindi to type in Mangal only, and states that another font leads to non-qualification. Notes and passages kept in Kruti Dev can be converted here for practice.
It converts Kruti Dev 010, and Kruti Dev 011 as tested on a published bulletin: there 011 differs only in two quote-mark glyphs, which the tool reads too. Text in another legacy font, such as Chanakya, converts correctly only where that font puts its glyphs on the same keys.
