Hindi Typing

Type Hindi in Unicode with an InScript or Remington layout on any keyboard, then copy it as Unicode or Krutidev.

Keyboard layout

AltGr types punctuation and Devanagari digits.

Types Hindi in Unicode from an ordinary English keyboard, with the two layouts the SSC allows in its Hindi typing tests: InScript and Remington (GAIL). Nothing needs installing: each key is read by its position, and the on-screen keyboard below the text shows what every key types, and types it when tapped on a phone.

Copy the text as Unicode, which shows in Mangal and every modern font, or as Kruti Dev 010 for documents still kept in that font. Nothing you type leaves your browser.

How to use it

  • InScript is Windows' own Hindi keyboard (“Hindi Traditional”), key for key. Letters are typed in the order they are spoken, a vowel sign after its consonant and D (्) between two consonants to join them. AltGr types Latin punctuation such as ? and ; and the Devanagari digits; Ctrl+Shift+1 and Ctrl+Shift+2 type the zero-width joiner and non-joiner, which after ् force a half letter or a visible ्.
  • Remington (GAIL) follows the old Hindi typewriter, as Microsoft Indic Input implements it. It keeps the typewriter's order: ि is typed before its consonant or conjunct, the reph (र् over a letter) and the rakar (्र) after it. Full ख, श, ध and similar letters are a half letter followed by the ा stem, आ is अ followed by ा, and ई is इ followed by the reph. ँ is ॅ followed by the anusvara, and may come before a ु or ू. Esc, then a key, types a nukta letter or a symbol: Esc then M is ड़. The numpad types Devanagari digits, or Latin digits with Caps Lock on. Like Indic Input, the layout cannot type ाँ (ा and ॅ join into ॉ first, so माँ is written मां), ङ or ञ on their own, or the visarga: Shift+3 types a colon.
  • System keyboard leaves typing to your device's own Hindi keyboard, such as a phone's, and changes nothing.

Keys are read by where they sit, not by the letter your keyboard prints, so the layouts work the same on a French or German keyboard. Backspace straight after a key removes all that key typed, including a ि it moved or a vowel it joined. With InScript or Remington chosen, a phone's own keyboard stays closed and the on-screen keyboard types; Shift and AltGr on it apply to the next key.

Examples

The same word on both layouts

Remington keys
fganh
Text
हिंदी

Both type हिंदी. InScript takes ह before its ि; Remington takes the ि first, as the typewriter did, and the tool stores it after ह.

Remington: a conjunct, a stem and a reph

In fLFkfr the first ि is typed before the whole conjunct स्थ, and k after the half थ completes it. In /keZ the stem completes ध and the reph Z, typed after म, is stored as the र् before it.

Hindi in the SSC typing tests

The SSC's notice for the Combined Higher Secondary Level Examination 2026 (para 13.9.13.7(viii)) requires candidates who take the LDC/JSA typing test in Hindi to type in the Mangal font only; another font leads to non-qualification. Its instructions for Hindi typing and stenography tests let each candidate choose, at the start of the test, between an InScript (modified) and a Remington keyboard layout.

The SSC does not publish what its modification of InScript changes. The InScript here is the Hindi keyboard Windows ships, which the SSC's layout sheet points to, and its Remington is the one in Microsoft's Indic input tools, which the sheet also points to.

Frequently asked questions

Either is allowed. Remington suits anyone who learnt on a Hindi typewriter or in Kruti Dev: its letter keys are the same. InScript is built into Windows and phones, so it can be practised anywhere without extra software.
On the letter keys, yes: Hkkjr types भारत in both. The number row differs. In Kruti Dev = is त्र; in Remington (GAIL) it is ृ, and त्र is Shift+9.
The text is Unicode, so it shows in Mangal wherever Mangal is chosen, as in Word on Windows, and in another Hindi font elsewhere. Only the shapes of the letters differ between fonts.
