Hindi Typing Test
Hindi typing speed test in Mangal (Unicode) with InScript or Remington, measured the way SSC counts words.
A Hindi typing speed test on the two layouts the SSC allows, InScript and Remington (GAIL), from an ordinary English keyboard with nothing to install. The text is Unicode, the encoding the Mangal font shows and the SSC requires. Tests run from 15 seconds to 10 minutes, or for 25 to 100 words, on common Hindi words or on passages in the plain style of exam passages.
Speed is counted in key depressions, five to a word, as the SSC counts it, so a word costs what it takes to type on your layout. Nothing you type leaves your browser, and your best in each mode is saved on this device only.
Options and keys
- Keyboard — InScript (the default) or Remington: each key is read by its position, whatever layout your computer uses, and the on-screen keyboard below the text shows what every key types. On a phone, tap it to type. System keyboard takes the Hindi keyboard of your own device instead.
- Remington order — type ि before its consonant and the reph after its syllable, as on the typewriter. Letters with no key of their own are built from two: the half letter then ा for ख, श, ध and others, अ then ा for आ, इ then the reph for ई. Esc, then a key, types ख़ ग़ ज़ ड़ ढ़ फ़.
- Show next key — outlines the key to press next on the on-screen keyboard, with Shift, AltGr or Esc when it needs one, and the space bar once a word is done. It follows the fewest keys for the word, so on Remington it shows ि before its consonant. On by default; switch it off to type from memory, as in the exam.
- Text — Words gives common Hindi words in random order, none repeated within 30 words; Passage gives passages in order, running on into the next if a timed test outlasts one.
- Length — 15 or 30 seconds, or 1, 2, 3, 5 or 10 minutes (1 minute by default); or 25, 50 or 100 words. The SSC and Delhi Police tests last 10 minutes.
- Mistakes — a wrong key does not go into the text: the syllable you are on turns red until the right key comes, so Backspace is not needed and does nothing. A key that is right but not the shortest way, such as a half letter that will take a ा, is accepted.
- Pausing and restarting — the test starts with your first key and pauses when you click outside the test or switch tabs; options and the on-screen keyboard do not pause it. Tab then Enter, or Restart, starts the same text again; New text draws another.
How speed is counted
The SSC counts typing in key depressions: its notice for the CHSL 2026 typing test sets 30 words per minute in Hindi as about 9,000 key depressions an hour, which is 5 to a word. A Hindi letter can take one key or several, and not the same number on each layout, so the test counts each word you finish as the fewest keys that type it on your layout, plus one for its space. Shift and AltGr are not counted; Esc is, since it is a key press of its own.
The fewest keys are found from the layout itself, by trying every way its keys can build the word, the Remington rules included. They are what a perfect typist presses, so a word is worth the same however you typed it, and a slip you corrected adds nothing.
With the System keyboard there is no layout to count from, so each character counts as one key depression, and the result says so. Raw speed and accuracy count the keys you actually pressed, as in the English typing test.
WPM = key depressions of the words finished, with a space after each ÷ 5 ÷ minutes
Raw WPM = every key pressed ÷ 5 ÷ minutes
Accuracy = correct key presses ÷ all key presses × 100
Examples
The same word on each layout
- InScript keys
- Mf&e
- Remington keys
- f'k{kk
Both type शिक्षा. InScript has a key for क्ष and puts ि after its consonant, so it takes 4 keys. Remington types ि first, builds श and क्ष from their half letters and ा, and takes 6. The word counts as 4 key depressions on InScript and 6 on Remington.
A short test on Remington
- Text
- भारत एक विशाल देश है।
- Keys pressed
- Hkkjr ,d fo'kky ns'k gS!
At one key every 300 ms the test ends on the last key after 6.9 seconds. The five words and the four spaces between them come to 24 key depressions, so the speed is 41.7 WPM, shown as 42. Counted in characters, as with the System keyboard, the same text is 21.
Hindi speeds in government typing tests
| Post | Speed | Time | Key depressions in that time |
|---|---|---|---|
| SSC CHSL: Lower Division Clerk / Junior Secretariat Assistant | 30 wpm | 10 min | 1,500 |
| Delhi Police: Head Constable (Ministerial) | 25 wpm | 10 min | 1,250 |
What the exams require
The SSC's CHSL 2026 notice (para 13.9.13.7) sets the typing test for Lower Division Clerk and Junior Secretariat Assistant at 30 words per minute in Hindi, about 9,000 key depressions an hour, in 10 minutes, with speed judged on the accuracy of the typing. Hindi must be typed in the Mangal font; the candidate chooses InScript or Remington at the start of the test.
The Delhi Police notice for Head Constable (Ministerial) 2025 (para 24) sets 25 words per minute in Hindi over 10 minutes, on a passage of at least 350 words or 1,750 strokes, again five to a word. It deducts mistakes from the speed and awards up to 25 marks by speed band. This test shows your speed before any such deduction; the SSC typing test marks a full exam script, deductions and marks included.
