SSC Typing Test
Practise the SSC CHSL and CGL typing tests and Delhi Police typing in the exam format, marked by the exam's own rules.
Passage
10:00
10 minutes, from your first key. Begin each paragraph on a new line with Tab.
A practice typing test in the format of the SSC CHSL typing test for LDC and JSA, the CHSL skill test for Data Entry Operators, the CGL Data Entry Speed Test (DEST) and the Delhi Police Head Constable (Ministerial) typing test, in English or, where the exam allows it, in Hindi on InScript or Remington. As in the exam, the passage sits above a plain text box: there is no colouring as you type, you can correct anything until time is up, and you submit when you are done.
Your script is then marked the way the exam marks it: SSC tests with full and half mistakes from the SSC's evaluation guideline, Delhi Police with its notice's speed formula and marks table. Every mistake is marked on the passage and listed with its class. Nothing you type leaves your browser.
Options and keys
- Exam — sets the time, the passage length and the marking (see the table below). The passage is drawn from passages written for this site in the plain official style of exam passages; New passage draws another.
- Medium — English or Hindi, for the LDC/JSA and Delhi Police tests; the others are in English only. In Hindi, Keyboard picks InScript or Remington, typed from an ordinary English keyboard with each key read by its position, or your device's own Hindi keyboard.
- Category — for DEST, which publishes a different error limit for each category.
- Compensatory time — the 5 extra minutes the SSC gives candidates eligible for a scribe. Delhi Police grants none.
- Typing — the clock starts with your first key and the box closes when time is up. Begin every paragraph on a new line with Tab, as the SSC requires; Esc then Tab leaves the box. Backspace, arrow keys and the mouse all work for corrections. Pasting is turned off. The passage scrolls to follow the paragraph you are typing.
- Submitting early — if part of the passage is still untyped, Submit first says how many words will count as omitted; Submit anyway marks the script.
- Result — the exam's figures come first, judged on the whole passage over the whole time. Below them, what you typed is judged on its own: its words, its speed over the time you used and its mistakes, without the passage you did not reach. In the marked passage each mistake shows what you typed after an arrow, and the passage not reached is folded away.
How the script is marked
Your script and the passage are split into words at spaces, with punctuation at the ends of each word set apart, and lined up word by word in the way that finds the fewest mistakes, as an examiner reads a script. A skipped word is read as one omission, so the words after it still line up. Two words typed in swapped order are a transposition, a word split by a space or two words run together are a spacing error, and a word left untyped when time ran out is an omission.
SSC. A full mistake is a word omitted, added, repeated, substituted or misspelt, or left incomplete. A half mistake is a spacing error (a missing space, an extra space or two spaces between words), a wrong capital letter (English only), a punctuation mark omitted, added or changed, two words transposed, or a paragraph not begun with Tab. A word with several slips counts once, at its worst. The SSC publishes no formula for its error percentage, so this test divides by the words of the passage and prints the working beside the result; gross speed counts every key depression typed over the time allowed.
Delhi Police. Every mistake counts as one: omissions, substitutions, additions, punctuation, wrong capitals, a gap in a word, an extra gap between words and a paragraph not made (on a new line; no Tab is needed). Speed is strokes ÷ 5 ÷ 10 minutes, less one word a minute for each mistake, as in the notice's worked example. The marks table is in whole words a minute, so the speed is taken down to a whole number before it is banded.
On a Hindi layout a stroke is a key depression: the fewest keys that type each word on your layout, with one for each space, Tab and Enter, as in the Hindi typing test. With your device's own keyboard each character counts as one.
SSC error % = (full mistakes + half mistakes ÷ 2) ÷ words in the passage × 100
SSC gross speed = key depressions typed ÷ 5 ÷ minutes allowed (wpm), or × 60 ÷ minutes (KDPH)
Delhi Police actual speed = strokes ÷ 5 ÷ 10 − mistakes
Examples
An SSC script with full and half mistakes
- Passage
- The office will remain closed on Monday. All officers are requested to complete their pending work by Saturday.
- Typed
- The ofice will remain closed on monday. All officers are requested to to complete their work by Saturday
- Typed, Tab shown as →
- →The ofice will remain closed on monday. All officers are requested to to complete their work by Saturday
The marking finds office (spelling, full); Monday. (capitalisation, half); to (word repeated, full); pending (word omitted, full); Saturday. (punctuation, half). That is 3 full and 2 half mistakes against 18 words, so the error rate is (3 + 2 ÷ 2) ÷ 18 × 100 = 22.22%.
The Delhi Police worked example
2,000 strokes in 10 minutes are 400 words, a gross speed of 40 wpm. With 10 mistakes the actual speed is 40 − 10 = 30 wpm, which qualifies in English and earns 10 marks. This is the notice's own example, and this test follows it. The notice also says “1 word for each mistake”, which, taking a word off the 400 before dividing by 10, would give 39.0 wpm; the example takes a word a minute instead.

What the notices say
CHSL 2026 (para 13.9.13): LDC and JSA type for 10 minutes at 35 wpm in English or 30 wpm in Hindi, about 10,500 and 9,000 key depressions an hour, with speed “adjudged on the accuracy”. Data Entry Operators in the departments at para 8.1 (Consumer Affairs, Food and Public Distribution, the SSC and Culture) enter about 3,700–4,000 key depressions in 15 minutes at 15,000 an hour; in other departments, about 2,000–2,200 at 8,000 an hour. Candidates eligible for a scribe get 5 more minutes. Errors are calculated to two decimal places; Hindi is typed in Mangal only. The notice publishes no error limit, and the passage length for LDC/JSA is not published, so this test sizes it at the required speed for 10 minutes.
CGL 2026 (paras 13.9.10, 16.2): DEST is about 2,000 key depressions in 15 minutes, with at most 20% errors for UR, 25% for OBC and EWS, and 30% for other categories. Tax Assistant in CBIC and CBDT, UDC/SSA in the Central Bureau of Narcotics and the posts needing computer proficiency (para 13.9.9) have a higher standard that the notice does not state.
SSC evaluation guideline: the full and half mistakes above, Tab at the start of every paragraph, and one space after every punctuation mark. It counts “every omission of a word”, so passage left untyped counts word by word. The SSC's Hindi instructions let the candidate choose InScript or Remington at the start of the test.
Delhi Police HC (Ministerial) 2025 (para 24): 10 minutes, at least 30 wpm in English or 25 in Hindi, on a passage of at least 400 words or 2,000 strokes in English and 350 words or 1,750 strokes in Hindi, with up to 25 marks by speed. No 2026 notice had been published when these rules were last checked.
