Enter the guesses you have made and the colours your game gave them, and the solver lists every word that could still be the answer, with the guesses that would narrow them down fastest. It works for Wordle and for games like it, from 4 to 8 letters, and shows how each suggestion is chosen.

Wordle is a trademark of The New York Times Company. This solver is not affiliated with it, and it does not know the day's answer: it works only from your guesses.

How to use it

  • Word length — 4 to 8 letters; changing it clears the guesses.
  • Your first guess — type it and press Enter or Add. Its tiles start grey: tap each one until it shows your game's colour, grey, then yellow, then green. Add each later guess the same way: a letter already green in the same place starts green, as the game will show it again. The cross beside a row removes it.
  • Paste a shared grid — paste the result your game shares into the guess field. Its coloured squares, including the high-contrast orange and blue, set the colours of the rows you have entered and of the guesses you type next. Words pasted with the grid fill the rows too.
  • Hard mode — suggests only words that could be the answer, as hard mode requires every hint to be used.

Under your guesses, the letters known so far: those placed, those in the word whose place is still unknown, and those ruled out. Below, the possible answers, likely ones first, then the best words to try next: words whose letters narrow the answers fastest, each with the number of answers it leaves on average and marked “could win” when it may also be the answer. Click any word to put it in the guess field. A guess whose colours no word can produce is pointed out by row, usually a tile set to the wrong colour.

How the solver chooses

A word stays possible when each of your guesses, scored against it, gives exactly the colours your game showed. Scoring follows the game's rule for repeated letters: exact matches turn green first, then each remaining letter turns yellow while the answer still has an unmatched copy of it, left to right; the rest are grey. So a guess with two Es against an answer with one shows one E coloured and one grey, and the solver keeps only words with exactly one E.

For each guess the solver works out the colours it would get against every possible answer, and groups the answers by those colours. Whichever answer is right, you land in its group, so with every answer equally likely, the expected number left is the sum of each group's size squared, divided by the number of answers. A guess that could itself be the answer has a group of one, all green, which leaves nothing to find, so that group counts as 0. The guesses with the lowest figure come first, the more common word first among equals.

Answers are weighed against a list of likely answers: common words in their base form, spelled alike in American and British English. When none of those fit, which happens with answers such as plurals, every valid word that fits is used instead. The best guess is often not a possible answer: a word with five untested letters can split the answers better than one that might be right.

Expected answers left = (n₁² + n₂² + … + nₖ²) ÷ N, for groups of n₁ … nₖ answers out of N
Less 1 ÷ N when the guess could itself be the answer

Examples

Repeated letters

Guess
SPEED
Answer
ABIDE
Colours
S grey, P grey, E yellow, E grey, D yellow

ABIDE holds one E, so only the first E of SPEED is coloured. Neither E is in the right place, so the solver keeps words with exactly one E, not third or fourth.

Groups of answers

A guess that splits 10 answers into groups of 4, 3, 2, 1 leaves (4² + 3² + 2² + 1²) ÷ 10 = 3 answers on average. One that splits them into ten groups of one leaves 1, or 0.9 if it could itself be the answer.

After a first guess

With five letters ruled out, the best next guess tests new letters rather than trying to be the answer.

Frequently asked questions

No. It has no link to any game and works only from the guesses and colours you enter, so it helps with any day's puzzle, and with games of other lengths.
Games choose answers from their own lists. A plural or a less common word can be the answer: it then appears under other valid words, and the suggestions switch to weighing every word that fits.
