Word Unscrambler

Unscramble letters into every word they make, with blanks, length and pattern filters and Scrabble points.

Up to 15 letters. Type ? for a blank tile, up to 3.

Points

Type a set of letters and the unscrambler lists every English word they spell, longest first, with each word's Scrabble or Words With Friends points. It helps with a Scrabble rack, a newspaper jumble, or an anagram in a puzzle. Blank tiles, a pattern of known letters and length limits narrow the list.

How to use it

  • Letters — up to 15 letters, in any order and either case; spaces are ignored. Type ? for a blank tile, up to 3. Accented letters count as plain ones (é as e).
  • Points — Scrabble or Words With Friends tile values beside each word, or none.
  • Starts with, Ends with and Contains keep words with those letters together in that place. Pattern fixes letters by position, with _ for any letter: _a__e finds five-letter words with A second and E last.
  • Shortest and Longest limit the word length, from 2 to 25 letters. Common words only hides rare words.

Results update as you type, grouped by length, longest first. With points on, each group lists the highest-scoring words first; otherwise the more common words come first. Click a word to copy it. A group of more than 120 words shows the first 120 and a button for the rest.

How words are found

Each word in the list is checked letter by letter against your tiles: a word fits when your tiles hold enough of each of its letters, and blank tiles can make up what is missing. No arrangements of your letters are tried, so 15 letters and 3 blanks are searched as quickly as a few.

A letter played with a blank is underlined. When a word needs a blank for a letter it holds twice, the blank takes the later copy. Points are the face value of the tiles, with nothing for a blank, since board squares depend on where the word is played.

The words come from SCOWL, the word lists behind many spell checkers, up to its size 80 of valid words in current use, in American and British spelling, plus the words of ENABLE, a public-domain list compiled for word games. Proper nouns, abbreviations, unit symbols, slurs and words with hyphens or apostrophes are left out. A word is common when SCOWL lists it at size 50 or below, its medium-sized list.

Frequently asked questions

Scrabble tournaments use their own lists — NWL in North America, Collins in most other countries — which are copyrighted, so they cannot be used here. The lists here are close but not the same: a word one of them allows may be absent, and a few words here may not be allowed in a tournament. Names, abbreviations and words with hyphens are left out.
Yes: choose Words With Friends under Points to see its tile values. The game checks words against its own list, so a word listed here may not be playable there, and the other way round.
