Converts weights between kilograms, grams and tonnes, pounds, ounces and stones, US and UK tons, and the units of precious metals — carats, grains, troy ounces and tolas. A stone and pounds result gives body weight the way the UK and Ireland write it.
Strictly these are units of mass; weight is the force that mass exerts under gravity. On Earth the two are used interchangeably, and so is this converter.
How to use it
Type a value and choose the units to convert from and to; the pickers accept lbs, kgs, gms and other common spellings. Precision is Auto (up to 10 significant figures, and every whole-number digit) or Fixed (0 to 10 decimal places), and applies to the result and the table alike.
Stone and pounds is a result only: choose it under To. Its pounds show to one decimal place under Auto, or to the Fixed places. The total is rounded before it is split, so a remainder never reaches 14 pounds. To convert from stones and pounds, enter the stones in Stone, then the pounds separately, and add the two results.
How the units are defined
The pound is exactly 0.45359237 kg by the international yard and pound agreement of 1959. The avoirdupois ounce is 1/16 of it, the stone 14 pounds, the US short ton 2,000 pounds and the UK long ton 2,240.
Precious metals use their own ounce: the troy ounce, 480 grains, is 31.1034768 g against 28.34952313 g for the ordinary ounce, so gold priced per ounce is priced per troy ounce. The carat for gems is 200 mg. In India gold is also sold by the tola of 180 grains, 11.6638038 g. For the tael, baht and sovereign, and the fine gold in a weight, use the Gold Weight Converter.
