How to use it
Type a value and choose the units to convert from and to; the pickers accept symbols and plurals such as cms, inches or ". Precision is Auto (up to 10 significant figures, and every whole-number digit) or Fixed (0 to 10 decimal places), and applies to the result and the table alike. Lengths cannot be negative.
The result is a decimal number of the target unit: 170 cm is 66.92913386 in, or 5.577427822 ft — not feet and inches together. For that, use the Height Converter.
The exact inch
Since the international yard and pound agreement of 1959, the inch is exactly 2.54 centimetres, the foot exactly 0.3048 metres and the mile exactly 1,609.344 metres. Every imperial length here is defined from the metre, so the factors below are exact rather than measured.
Dividing by 2.54 rarely ends: 1 cm is 0.3937007874 in to 10 significant figures, a decimal that in full repeats forever, so the result is rounded to the precision you choose. Converting the rounded figure back can miss the original in the last digit.
