Converts temperatures between Celsius, Fahrenheit, Kelvin and Rankine, with the formula for the pair and the value on all four scales at once.

How to use it

Type a value and choose the scales to convert from and to; C, F and celsius all work in the pickers. Negative temperatures are fine, down to absolute zero: anything colder is rejected. Precision is Auto (up to 10 significant figures, and every whole-number digit) or Fixed (0 to 10 decimal places).

Why temperature needs an offset

Celsius and Fahrenheit put their zero in different places, so converting takes an offset as well as a factor. That is also why doubling a temperature means nothing: 20 °C is not twice as warm as 10 °C, and the same two temperatures are 68 °F and 50 °F.

Kelvin and Rankine start at absolute zero, the coldest possible temperature. Kelvin uses the Celsius degree and Rankine the Fahrenheit degree, so K = °C + 273.15 and °R = °F + 459.67. The two everyday scales meet at −40, where -40 °C is -40 °F.

°F = °C × 9/5 + 32
°C = (°F − 32) × 5/9
K = °C + 273.15
°R = °F + 459.67

Examples

A fever reading

101.3 °F is 38.5 °C. Formula: °C = (°F − 32) × 5/9.

An oven setting

200 °C is 392 °F. Formula: °F = °C × 9/5 + 32.
