Converts a height in centimetres or metres to feet and inches, and feet and inches back to centimetres. The result is written both as 5 ft 6.9 in and as 5′ 6.9″, rounded to a tenth of an inch, a fraction of an inch or the nearest inch, with the rounded height converted back so you can see what the rounding cost.
How to use it
Choose the direction. From centimetres, type the height, or choose m to type it in metres, as 1.70; the value already entered converts with it. From feet and inches, an empty field counts as 0, and both fields accept decimals. Inches of 12 or more move into feet, and the tool says so: 14 in = 1 ft 2 in.
- Round to — 0.1 inch (the default), the nearest inch, or 1/2, 1/4, 1/8 or 1/16 inch. Fractions are reduced and written with ordinary digits, such as 5 ft 6 7/8 in.
- Copy — the result copies as written with ft and in, or with foot and inch marks.

How the conversion works
An inch is exactly 2.54 cm, so the height in inches is the centimetres divided by 2.54. That figure is rounded to the step you chose first, and only then split into whole feet of 12 inches and the inches left over. Rounding before splitting is what keeps the inches below 12: a height that rounds up to a whole foot carries into the feet instead of reading 5 ft 12 in.
In the other direction nothing is rounded: feet times 12 plus inches, times 2.54, is an exact decimal.

170 cm is 66.92913386 in, which is 5 ft 7 in to the nearest inch. That rounded height is 170.18 cm, so a form that asks for feet and inches records you 0.18 cm taller. To the nearest 1/8 inch it is 5 ft 6 7/8 in.

5 ft 10 in is 70 inches, and 70 × 2.54 is 177.8 cm, exactly.
152 cm
152 cm is 59.84251969 in, just short of 5 feet. To the nearest inch that rounds up to a whole foot, so the result is 5 ft 0 in, never 4 ft 12 in.
