How to use it

Type a value and choose the units to convert from and to; the pickers accept sq ft, sqft, m2 and other common spellings, and read gaj as the square yard. Precision is Auto (up to 10 significant figures, and every whole-number digit) or Fixed (0 to 10 decimal places), and applies to the result and the table alike. Areas cannot be negative.

Why area factors are squared

A square metre is a square one metre on each side, so converting it means converting both sides. A metre is 3.280839895 ft, but a square metre is 3.280839895 × 3.280839895 = 10.76391042 ft². Multiplying an area by the length factor alone undercounts it more than threefold.

The hectare is a square 100 metres on each side, 10,000 m². The acre is 43,560 ft², and since the international foot is exactly 0.3048 m, its size in square metres is exact too: 4,046.856422 m² to 10 significant figures. A hectare is 2.471053815 ac.

ft² = m² ÷ 0.09290304

m² = ft² × 0.09290304

m² ≈ ac × 4,046.856422

ac ≈ ha × 2.471053815
