A shift that runs past midnight counts on the day it starts. Overtime rules vary by state and country; the tool applies the thresholds set above.

Adds up a week of clock-in and clock-out times, less unpaid breaks, and splits the hours into regular time, overtime and double time. With an hourly rate it works out the pay. Presets fill in the federal US, California and Indian overtime rules, and every number stays editable for a contract or another state.

How to use it

  • Days โ€” tick the days worked. Each day takes a start and end time, and a second shift for a split day, with its unpaid break in minutes. A shift that ends earlier than it starts runs past midnight; a second shift that starts earlier than the first is on the next morning.
  • Overtime rules โ€” a preset, summed up in a line beneath it. Edit overtime settings shows its numbers: the weekly and daily overtime thresholds and the double-time threshold in hours, where an empty field switches it off, and the rates that multiply the hourly rate. Changing any of them makes the rules Custom.
  • Round punches โ€” rounds each start and end time to the nearest 5, 6 or 15 minutes before anything is added, with half a step rounding up.
  • Hourly rate โ€” optional; without it, only hours are shown. Amounts carry no currency.
  • Copy for a spreadsheet โ€” copies the week as tab-separated rows, with hours as decimals and pay per day when a rate is set, ready to paste into Excel or Google Sheets.

How overtime is counted

Each day is taken on its own first. Hours past the double-time threshold are double time, and hours past the daily threshold up to that point are overtime; double time takes the place of overtime for those hours rather than adding to it. The regular hours left then count toward the weekly threshold in week order, and the ones past it become overtime on the day they fall. The week's overtime is so the larger of the daily and the weekly count, never the two added together, which is how both the US and the Indian rules avoid paying the same hour twice.

A shift that runs past midnight counts in full on the day it starts, including a Sunday night shift that ends in the next week. Two shifts on one day that overlap, or a break longer than the shifts, mark that day and leave it out of the totals until it is corrected.

With Round overtime fractions on โ€” offered with the India presets and Custom โ€” each day's overtime is counted the way rule 69(2) of India's Central Rules asks: a fraction of an hour from 15 to 30 minutes counts as 30 minutes, and more than 30 minutes as a full hour. The rule says nothing of fractions under 15 minutes, so those count as worked. The overtime paid can then be more than the time worked past the threshold.

Examples

A US week with a split shift

Monday from 08:00 to 12:00 and 12:30 to 17:30, then Tuesday to Friday from 08:00 to 17:00 with a 30-minute lunch, add up to 43 hours. Under the federal rule, 3:00 of it is past 40 hours and paid at 1.5 times the rate: at 20 an hour, the week pays 890.00.

A long day in California

Monday from 07:00 to 20:30 less 30 minutes is 13 hours: 8:00 regular, 4:00 overtime past 8 hours and 1:00 double time past 12. With four days of 09:00 to 17:30 less 30 minutes after it, the week has 45 hours, but only 40 hours of them are regular, so the weekly rule adds no more overtime: 4:00 overtime and 1:00 double time in all.

Overtime fractions for a daily wager in India

From 09:00 to 17:40 is 8 hours and 40 minutes, 40 minutes past the daily 8. Under rule 69(2), more than 30 minutes counts as an hour, so the day carries 1:00 overtime at 2 times the wage rate.

The overtime rules behind the presets

  • US federal (FLSA) โ€” hours past 40 in a workweek are paid at no less than one and a half times the regular rate (29 U.S.C. ยง 207(a)(1)). Federal law sets no daily limit. Rounding punches to the nearest 5 minutes, tenth or quarter of an hour is accepted as long as, over time, it does not leave employees underpaid for the time they worked (29 CFR 785.48(b)).
  • California โ€” one and a half times the rate past 8 hours in a workday or 40 in a workweek, and twice the rate past 12 hours in a day (Labor Code ยง 510(a)). Section 510 also pays overtime for the first 8 hours on the seventh consecutive day worked in a workweek, and double time after 8 hours on it; the tool does not apply that rule, so a seventh day needs adjusting by hand.
  • India โ€” the Occupational Safety, Health and Working Conditions Code, 2020, in force from 21 November 2025, limits work to 8 hours a day (ยง 25), pays overtime at twice the rate of wages, counted daily or weekly, whichever favours the worker (ยง 27), and counts the hours of a night shift after midnight in the day before (ยง 28). The Central Rules of 8 May 2026 set the thresholds: overtime past 8 hours a day for a daily wager and past 48 hours a week for other workers (rules 64 and 69(1)), with the fractions of rule 69(2). They apply where the Central Government is the appropriate Government; each state notifies its own rules.

Whether someone is owed overtime at all โ€” exemptions, salaried roles, contracts and collective agreements โ€” is beyond the tool, which applies the thresholds it is given.
