Works out the time between a start and an end time, less any unpaid break, as hours and minutes and as decimal hours for a timesheet. An end time earlier than the start is taken as the next day, so night shifts need no extra step; turn on Set dates for spans longer than a day.

How the hours are counted

Without dates, the end time is on the same day as the start when it is later, and on the next day when it is earlier. The same start and end time counts as no time rather than 24 hours; a full day or more needs Set dates, where the count runs from one date and time to the other and the end must not be before the start. The break, in whole minutes, is taken off the total, and cannot be longer than the time between start and end.

Decimal hours are the minutes divided by 60, rounded to two places, the way most payroll systems take them; the minutes are a fraction of an hour, not the digits after the point. The times carry no time zone, so a night when clocks change for daylight saving is counted as it reads on the clock, an hour more or less than was actually worked.

Examples

A day shift with a lunch break

From 08:45 to 17:15 less a 45-minute lunch is 7 hours and 45 minutes: 7:45, or 7.75 decimal hours.

A night shift

10:00 pm to 6:30 am the next morning, less a 30-minute break, is 8 hours. The end time is earlier than the start, so it is counted on the next day.

Minutes that do not divide evenly

09:10 to 16:30 is 7:20, which is 7.33 decimal hours: 20 minutes is a third of an hour, rounded to two places.

A weekend on call

From Friday 6 March 2026 at 18:00 to Sunday 8 March 2026 at 14:00 is 44 hours, or 1 day and 20 hours.
