Noise reduction

Makes a small or soft photo larger and cleaner: 2× or 4× its size, or sharper at the size it is. A super-resolution model redraws the detail, smooths noise and removes the blocks JPEG compression leaves, which plain resizing only enlarges. It runs on your device, so the photo is not uploaded, and there are no credits to buy.

How to use it

Size: Same size sharpens and cleans the photo without enlarging it; 2× (the default) and 4× double or quadruple each side. Type: Photo for camera pictures and screenshots; Illustration for drawings, cartoons and anime, which it keeps flat and crisp but which paints photos. Noise reduction (Photo only): Off, Low (the default) or High; the differences are subtle, and High suits grainy low-light photos. The result is saved in the photo's own format, or JPG, PNG or WebP.

In a browser with WebGPU, such as recent Chrome or Edge, a photo takes seconds. Without it, the model runs on the processor, one core at a time, and the tool takes photos of up to 0.15 MP (about 387 × 387 px), about half a minute each; a run estimated longer than that asks first. A run can be cancelled at any time.

The result can be at most 24 MP on a computer and 8 MP on a phone or iPad. When a size would pass that, the tool offers the largest scale that fits. A photo already larger than that, such as a 12 MP phone photo on a phone, cannot be enhanced even at Same size: use a computer, or make it smaller first with the Image Resizer.

How it works

The Photo model is Real-ESRGAN's realesr-general-x4v3, a small network trained on photos degraded with blur, noise and compression, so it learns to undo them while enlarging 4×. Noise reduction blends it with its weak-denoise twin, as Real-ESRGAN itself does: Off uses the twin, High the original, Low half of each. Illustration is RealESRGAN_x4plus_anime_6B. The models are 4.53 MB and 16.63 MB downloads, made the first time each is used, and the runtime that runs them is 25.75 MB more with WebGPU, or 13.96 MB without. Your browser keeps them, so later visits usually skip the download.

The photo is processed in tiles of 256 pixels on WebGPU and 128 without, each with 12 pixels of its neighbours around it so that no seam shows. The model always enlarges 4×; 2× and Same size average each group of its pixels back down, which keeps the cleaner edges while smoothing away detail the model invented.

The model adds detail it predicts from what it has learned; it cannot recover text, faces or details that are not in the photo. Transparency is enlarged separately and smoothly, and a black-and-white photo stays black and white.

4× would be 5120 × 3840 px, 19.66 MP: past the 8 MP a phone can hold. The tool offers 2.5× instead, which gives 3200 × 2400 px. On a computer, 4× fits within 24 MP.

Frequently asked questions

Divide its pixels by the print resolution: at 300 DPI, a 2400 × 3000 px result prints at 8 × 10 inches. The Image Resizer sets the DPI and print size exactly.
Mild softness, such as a small photo enlarged or a slightly soft focus, yes. Motion blur and badly out-of-focus photos stay blurry: the detail is not in the photo to recover.
No. The model and the photo stay in your browser; the only downloads are the model and its runtime, from this site.
