Online Notepad
A plain-text notepad that saves as you type in your browser, with several notes, search and download.
A notepad for plain text that keeps several notes and saves each one as you type. Notes are stored in this browser on this device and never sent anywhere, so there is no account and nothing to sign in to. It suits lists, drafts, things to paste later and anything you want to come back to on the same computer or phone.
How to use it
- Notes — each note takes its title from its first line that is not blank, up to 60 characters, or shows as Untitled. The list puts the note you edited last at the top, with when you edited it. New starts an empty note; the copy and bin buttons duplicate and delete the open one, with Undo for 10 seconds after a delete.
- Open file — opens a .txt, .md, .csv, .log or .json file up to 5 MB as a new note, or into the open note while it is empty. You can also drop a file on the editor.
- Download saves the open note as a .txt file; Download all saves every note in one ZIP, a .txt file each, named after its title. Files are UTF-8 with LF line endings.
- Find and replace — the search button, or Ctrl+F (⌘F on a Mac), with match case, whole words and regular expressions.
- Options — Font and Size change how the text looks, not the note. Tab types a tab; press Esc and then Tab to move on from the editor.
Undo and redo work per note for as long as the page is open. Words, characters and lines for the open note show under the editor, beside whether it is saved.
In two tabs at once, a note saved in one tab shows in the other. If the other tab had no unsaved changes to that note, it loads the new text, and its undo history for that note starts again. If both tabs changed the same note, the second to save keeps its text as a new note marked “(copy from another tab)”, so neither version is lost.
Where your notes are kept
Notes are stored in the browser's own database for this site (IndexedDB), on this device only. They stay there until something removes them:
- clearing this site's data in the browser's settings;
- closing a private or incognito window;
- in Safari, 7 days of browsing in which this site gets no click or tap, as part of its tracking prevention. A site added to the Home Screen is exempt;
- the device running low on space, when the browser clears the sites used least recently first.
Keep notes when space runs low, in Options, asks the browser to make this site's storage persistent, which spares it in that last case. Firefox asks you; Chrome, Edge and Safari decide by themselves from how you use the site. The tool shows the browser's answer. Persistent storage still goes when you clear site data.
The sure way to keep notes is a backup: Download all saves them as a ZIP you can keep anywhere, and Open file brings a note back.
