Converts between the South Asian scales — lakh, crore and lakh crore — the international million, billion and trillion, and the East Asian wan and yi. One entry gives the full number in both Indian and international grouping, how each system would say it, and the value in every scale.

How to use it

Type a value and choose its scale. The picker also finds short forms and other scripts: cr, lac, bn, 万, 億, and the Japanese and Korean man, oku and eok. Values may be grouped the Indian way (12,34,567) or the international way (1,234,567), and take up to 10 decimal places; the full number can have up to 30 digits.

The result shows the full number grouped the way the scale you chose is written — Indian grouping for lakh and crore — with the other grouping beneath it, the number in words up to 21 digits, and the reading in each system, such as 1.5 lakh crore, 1.5 trillion or 15,000 yi. The table lists the value in every scale, each grouped its own system's way. The address bar keeps the value and scale, so a copied link opens the same conversion. Everything runs in your browser.

Three ways to group digits

Every scale here is a power of ten, so converting moves the decimal point and nothing else. The tool shifts the digits you typed rather than computing in floating point, so 0.1 crore is exactly 1 million and every digit of a long number survives.

The international system names every third power of ten: thousand, million, billion, trillion. The South Asian system names the thousand, then every second power: lakh (10⁵) and crore (10⁷), which is why Indian grouping puts commas after the first three digits and then after every two. East Asian languages group by four: wan (万) is 10⁴ and yi (亿) is 10⁸.

Above a crore, sums are usually said by stacking words rather than with arab (10⁹) or kharab (10¹¹), as in “100 crore” or “1 lakh crore”. A lakh crore is 10¹², the form large sums in Indian budgets and news usually take, and why the readings here never use arab or kharab.
