Style
Position

Adds page numbers to a PDF: a report or thesis to submit, a bundle of scans to refer to by page, or a document with a cover and front matter. Numbers are added on top of each page as real text in the font Noto Sans; the page itself is not drawn again, so its text stays selectable and links and form fields keep working. The PDF is numbered on your device and never uploaded.

How to use it

Add one or more PDFs; each is numbered on its own, and a PDF with a password asks for it. The options, with their defaults:

  • Style: 1, Page 1, Page 1 of 9, 1 / 9, or lower-case Roman numerals (i, ii, iii, up to 3999). N is the last number printed.
  • Position: one of nine places, as the page is shown, so a page turned sideways in the PDF is numbered where a reader sees its bottom. Default bottom centre.
  • Margin: from the edges beside the number, in millimetres; default 10.
  • Start at (default 1), Size in points (default 11) and Colour (default black).
  • Pages: such as 3- to leave the first two pages bare; empty numbers every page.
  • Skip the first page: leaves page 1, a cover, without a number and out of the count.

The numbered PDF is named as in report-numbered.pdf.

Examples

A 5-page report with a cover

With the style Page 1 of N and Skip the first page on, the cover is left bare and N counts only the numbered pages: page 2: โ€œPage 1 of 4โ€, page 3: โ€œPage 2 of 4โ€, page 4: โ€œPage 3 of 4โ€, page 5: โ€œPage 4 of 4โ€.

Front matter in Roman numerals

For a 12-page PDF with Pages 2-4 and the Roman style: page 2: โ€œiโ€, page 3: โ€œiiโ€, page 4: โ€œiiiโ€. To go on with Arabic numbers from page 5, add the numbered PDF again with Pages 5- and the style 1.

Continuing from another file

Chapter two of a book whose first file ends at page 40: Start at 41 gives page 1: โ€œ41โ€, page 2: โ€œ42โ€, page 3: โ€œ43โ€.

Frequently asked questions

No. Your browser reads, numbers and saves the files on your device; they are not sent to CornerTools or anyone else, and neither is a password you type. To check, open the browser's developer tools at the Network tab and add a PDF: no request carries it. The PDF engine downloads from this site the first time you use it: a download to your browser, not an upload of your file.
